Sophos Firewall VM & SW - Only CPU Cores Count - No More RAM Limit

On March 1, 2025, an important change takes effect. The previous RAM limits for virtual and software-based Sophos Firewall instances are a thing of the past. The licensing model is being simplified and is now based only on the number of CPU cores. This change benefits both new and existing virtual, software-based and Cloud (BYOL) instances.

What changes in the licensing model?

Previously, Sophos Firewall licenses were structured not only by CPU cores, but also by a specific RAM value (for example, “SFV1C4” – 1 core and 4 GB RAM). With the current update, this RAM limit is removed, so the full assigned RAM capacity can be used regardless of the original license specification. This means that after a simple firewall restart, the previously defined RAM parameter is removed and the full memory becomes available.

Advantages for IT operations

Removing the RAM limit offers several advantages:

  • Simpler license management: IT administrators no longer have to worry about precisely coordinating RAM and CPU. Licensing is now based solely on the required computing power. This is particularly advantageous for cloud instances, as there were often no optimally matching options there.
  • Optimal resource utilization: Existing installations can use the entire available RAM, which can lead to better performance, especially in virtual environments.
  • Scalability: As requirements grow, companies can scale their firewall instances efficiently without being restricted by fixed RAM thresholds.
  • Simplified planning: Using CPU cores as the only limit makes budgeting and resource planning in IT infrastructures easier.

FAQ

What does the new licensing update include?

The update removes the previous RAM limits for virtual, software-based and Cloud (BYOL) instances of Sophos Firewall. Going forward, licensing is based exclusively on the number of CPU cores.

Does the update apply to all Sophos Firewall instances?

The update affects all new and existing virtual, software-based and Cloud (BYOL) instances. Home-user licenses remain unaffected for now and will be adjusted in a future update.

How is the update activated?

Existing installations benefit automatically from the change. After the update, IT administrators can restart the firewall to activate the removal of the RAM limit.

What impact does the update have on firewall performance?

Using the full available RAM can improve performance and resource efficiency, especially in virtualized environments.
