Request AirPlay Screen Mirroring with Sophos Mobile
Sophos Mobile can request AirPlay screen mirroring from a managed iPhone or iPad to a configured destination. Configuring the destination and requesting the device action are separate steps: use Einrichtung > Apple-Einrichtung > AirPlay for the destination, then Gerät anzeigen > Aktionen > AirPlay-Wiedergabe anfordern for the device in question. These menu labels are from the documented German Sophos interface; labels in another language may differ.
This feature is not a remote-support session and should not be confused with iPhone Mirroring on a Mac. The screen contents may become visible on the receiving device. Security note: Obtaining organizational approval and checking the physical receiving device are precautionary steps, not Sophos-confirmed prompts or tested outcomes. Do not display confidential information on a screen visible to others.
Check Before Requesting Mirroring
- Identify the iPhone or iPad in question unambiguously. Under Gerät anzeigen > Status, check its management status and management type; Geräteeigenschaften includes the model and operating system version, among other details. Before submitting the task, check the authorized administrator role, license for the target tenant, specific management mode, and eligibility of the iOS or iPadOS version in the affected Sophos Mobile environment. The available documentation does not provide a complete support matrix for these conditions. The mere presence of a device entry or an action does not establish support for every configuration. If anything is unclear, do not submit the request.
- Identify the intended receiving device unambiguously and check that it is on the same network as the iPhone or iPad. Sophos specifies this as a condition. A multicast route or firewall rule does not guarantee connectivity between separate networks.
- Coordinate the planned mirroring with the person using the device and the responsible party. The person at the iPhone or iPad must be able to use Control Center and stop mirroring locally; someone must watch the physical receiving device. If either person is unavailable or local stopping is inaccessible, do not start.
Configure the AirPlay Destination and Trigger the Device Action
- In Sophos Mobile, open Einrichtung > Apple-Einrichtung > AirPlay and click AirPlay-Wiedergabegerät erstellen under AirPlay-Wiedergabegeräte.
- Enter the name of the actual receiving device, for example
Besprechungsraum A. The MAC address is optional; if used, it must belong to the verified receiving device. If the receiving device requires a device password, enter its verified, authorised device password for the receiving device in the password field. Do not treat a temporary AirPlay code shown on the screen as a reusable Sophos password; do not publish or log the password. How Sophos stores, displays, or rotates the password, and how a one-time code is handled in this MDM workflow, are not verified here. If the password type or handling rules are unclear, clarify them with the device owner or administrators before saving, and suspend the procedure until then. - Click Anwenden. The destination appears under AirPlay-Wiedergabegeräte; then click Speichern. Saving only defines the destination; it does not confirm that video is displayed.
- Before triggering the action, establish from verifiable information in the affected Sophos Mobile environment which saved AirPlay playback device this action would use for this particular iPhone or iPad. Sophos documents neither a display showing an association between receiving device and iPhone or iPad, nor a destination chooser when multiple devices are saved, nor a confirmation dialog before the action is triggered. Do not infer the destination merely from the most recently saved receiver, its displayed name, or a hoped-for later dialog. If you cannot unambiguously establish the intended receiving device before clicking, do not click AirPlay-Wiedergabe anfordern; do not rely on a later selection or an option to cancel. Only after approval, an unambiguous destination match, and confirmation that the person at the correct iPhone or iPad can access its local Screen Mirroring stop control, click AirPlay-Wiedergabe anfordern under Gerät anzeigen > Aktionen for the correct device. This may trigger a request, but it confirms neither consent nor video output on the intended receiver.
Check the Result and Stop Mirroring
Under Gerät anzeigen > Aufträge, you can inspect recently completed, pending, and failed tasks. Aufträge in the sidebar shows their status; the magnifying-glass icon provides further details and, where applicable, error codes. A completed task does not prove that the person using the device consented or that the correct screen appears on the correct receiving device. Check the displayed image and confirm that no confidential content is exposed with the person at the iPhone or iPad and the person watching the physical receiver. This is a safety check, not a confirmed Sophos result status.
If no image appears, compare the device name, MAC address if applicable, and approved password type with the actual receiver without revealing any secrets. Then check that the devices are on the same network and inspect the specific task status. Do not loosen network access or policies as a precaution. If the action, permissions, or device support are unclear, stop and verify them in the affected Sophos Mobile environment.
To stop active mirroring, open Control Center on the iPhone or iPad, select Screen Mirroring, and tap Stop Mirroring. Labels may vary with language and operating system version. Then check the receiving device to confirm that it no longer displays the transmitted screen. Stopping cannot take back screen content already shown. Apple documents an MDM command to stop mirroring, but whether or how Sophos Mobile exposes a remote stop for this configuration is not verified. Do not rely on a remote stop as a fallback. Deleting a saved destination is no substitute for checking an already active mirroring session. Do not submit the request unless access to the local stop control has been checked beforehand and someone can watch the receiver.
