Sophos Endpoint, EDR, XDR, or MDR: which model fits?

Start with two questions: which systems and data sources need protection or investigation, and who will respond to an incident? Sophos Endpoint, EDR, and XDR are different technical offerings. MDR and MDR Plus add or organise the work of a commissioned security team. A name that sounds more advanced does not by itself determine the installed Agent Mode or specific response authority.

This decision guide uses current names, checked on 27 October 2026. The exact License Schedule, platform, quantity, and service scope govern an order. Older articles about Intercept X, MDR Essentials, or MDR Complete should not be used unchanged as a current offering matrix.

Distinguish the five offerings by task

OfferingFocusOrganisational question to resolve
Sophos EndpointProtection and control on supported endpoints, including against malware, ransomware, and exploitsWho handles alerts, checks operations, and responds to suspicions?
Sophos EDREndpoint protection plus detection, investigation, threat hunting, and response toolsAre people, time, and expertise available for investigation and authorised action?
Sophos XDRExtends EDR investigation to data from several parts of the IT environment and connected productsWhich sources actually supply data, and which response integrations are configured separately?
Sophos MDRSophos-operated monitoring, investigation, and containment within the agreed service scopeWho performs customer-side neutralisation and tasks outside that scope?
Sophos MDR PlusMDR with full-scale incident response within the agreed scopeAre access, contacts, authority, and local cooperation prepared?

Sophos EDR includes Sophos Endpoint. XDR extends this approach with visibility and investigation across products. This does not mean an XDR licence automatically purchases every source product, integration, or separately offered add-on.

MDR is more than an additional analysis button. The service requires operational data sources and agreed response authority. Current MDR help distinguishes the tiers as follows: MDR works on containment and provides guidance on neutralisation; full-scale incident response belongs to MDR Plus. This is not a guaranteed resolution time or a promise that Sophos will make every change in every third-party system itself.

Decide according to investigation capacity

Endpoint is the starting point when the organisation primarily needs managed device protection. Alerts and protection gaps still need handling. Automated prevention does not replace an available owner.

EDR is useful when an internal team can investigate suspicious device activity and respond. Before purchasing, that team should be able to describe an actual workflow: review a detection, narrow the device and timeframe, query telemetry, authorise an intervention, and document its outcome. Live Discover and Data Lake queries and isolation and Live Response provide the technical entry points.

XDR is useful when an investigation needs to combine several sources. For example, a team can compare endpoint activity with firewall or identity events. First clarify the source, licence, data quality, and permissions. A connected data source does not yet permit write actions in the source system; separate Data Ingest and Response integrations govern those actions.

Consider MDR or MDR Plus when internal capacity or continuous monitoring is lacking. The key comparison is not just “more features”, but “which tasks does Sophos perform, which remain ours, and who can decide outside office hours?” Contacts and the Authorize, Collaborate, or Notify Only modes are deliberately prepared in MDR setup. A contract alone does not make this process ready.

Check the licence name and Agent Mode separately

Software assignment offers the Endpoint, XDR, and XDR Sensor modes. This display is not a complete list of purchasable products. In particular, XDR Sensor provides no malware protection; it needs separate, working protection. A mode change can affect or remove existing third-party protection and belongs in a controlled pilot first.

For MDR sensors, documented differences also exist between older installation terminology and current service names. These differences do not establish blanket sensor entitlement for every MDR tier. Clarify the specific platform, contract, and installation route before assignment; details are in Manage Agent Mode and software.

Servers do not simply count as extra workstations. Windows and Linux servers need the appropriate server entitlement and platform check. Nor does a higher-tier product name restore full support for legacy systems; apply the lifecycle and extended-support check.

Add components only for a concrete need

Next-Gen SIEM adds its separate SIEM scope to eligible XDR/MDR operations; an existing XDR or MDR licence does not automatically activate the add-on. AI Defense detects and controls AI usage and differs from the AI Assistant for investigations. Workspace Protection bundles browser, ZTNA, Endpoint DNS, and Email Monitoring, but does not replace a separately required endpoint entitlement.

For each addition, record the task it solves, affected data and devices, and its operator. This avoids purchasing based on similar names or a product tile.

Verify the decision before rollout

Five documented outcomes make the selection traceable: affected users and servers, confirmed licence line items, intended Agent Mode with protection product, actually available data sources, and a reachable investigation/response owner. For MDR, add the service tier, contacts, and approved response mode.

Then verify a representative pilot using the endpoint onboarding path. A visible licence or installed component replaces neither a protection test nor an organisational readiness check.
