Learn more about Sophos XGS 8500 Security Appliance
Sophos XGS 8500 Security Appliance is the larger 2U platform for demanding Sophos Firewall deployments in enterprise and campus networks. It combines high processing capacity with fixed connections up to 100 gigabits per second and modular expansion. It suits central network nodes that must securely handle extensive traffic and many concurrent connections.
Capacity for demanding security inspections
The Xstream architecture combines a powerful CPU with a dedicated Flow Processor. Eligible traffic can be accelerated, while configured inspections determine protection coverage. Intrusion prevention, application control and TLS inspection are available under the selected Sophos Firewall entitlement. Hardware and required licences must therefore be planned together.
Compared with the XGS 7500, the XGS 8500 offers more capacity and faster QSFP28 connectivity for heavily loaded central gateways. Assess the need for this headroom against traffic mix and active protection features. Port speed does not guarantee equal throughput with every combination of security inspections.
Connect the network at up to 100 Gigabit
Fixed Gigabit copper ports and 10 Gigabit SFP+ ports are complemented by two QSFP28 connections up to 100 gigabits per second. Suitable Flexi-Port modules expand the interfaces. The firewall can thus accommodate different network segments and core connections. Optics, cables and modules must match the port, other endpoint and distance; transceivers are selected separately.
Design for reliable rack operation
Two internal hot-swappable power supplies and two NVMe SSDs create redundancy inside the appliance. Suitable independent power feeds complement this design. Protection against complete firewall failure requires a planned high-availability setup. Power and storage redundancy alone do not fulfil that role.
Deploy the larger platform where it fits
The XGS 8500 is offered as a standalone Security Appliance; protection packages and support are selected separately for the model. It suits organisations needing high processing capacity and fast central connections. A smaller XGS platform may be a better fit for lower requirements.
Before buying, align inspections, connection counts, expansion headroom and availability plans. Suitable rack space, cooling and power are equally important. These requirements help put platform performance to practical use.
