Sophos firewalls are one of the firewalls on the market that offer a lot of performance for the price. At least if you choose a firewall that is not too small, but rather one that is properly sized. <\/p>\n\n

Nevertheless, it can happen that you get the speed on the firewall due to a misconfiguration, but no longer behind the firewall.\nIn this case, it is helpful not to simply go to any speed test website, but to perform a clean test.\nOr you want to test the performance of a VPN connection.\nHere iPerf helps. <\/p>\n\n

At iPerf.fr you can download the tool.\nThe tool is available from Windows to macOS, Linux, Android and iOS. <\/p>\n\n

To measure the performance of a route, you need two things.\nA computer that acts as a Server and, consequently, a client that loads data from the Server. <\/p>\n\n

iPerf Server<\/h2>\n\n

The following command starts iPerf in Serverand waits for the client to connect.<\/p>\n\n

iperf3 -s<\/code><\/pre>\n\n

If you want to test e.g. the internet speed, you can also take one of the Public Server nearby.\nIn my experience, the ones on the iPerf.fr site are often offline and I use the list on the iPerf Public Server on GibHub<\/a> here. <\/p>\n\n
iPerf Client<\/h2>\n\n
On the client you can start a speed test with the following command.<\/p>\n\n

Of course there are several parameters for iPerf.\nHere are a few often used examples. <\/p>\n\n
Test UDP performance<\/h3>\n\n
With the parameter -u you can do the speetest from above, but with UDP.<\/p>\n\n
iperf3 -c 10.10.10.50 -u<\/code><\/pre>\n\n
Tests for a 1Gbit line<\/h3>\n\n
We often test a 1Gbit line to see where the limitations are here.<\/p>\n\n

  • -t:<\/strong> How many seconds should the test be performed.\n(default 10 seconds) <\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • -d:<\/strong> Execute a simultaneous bidirectional test<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • -u: <\/strong>Using UDP instead of TCP<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • -b: <\/strong>Target bandwidth 1G (default 1 Mbit\/s).\nThis setting requires UDP (-u). <\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • -p:<\/strong> Server(default 5001)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n
