Sophos UTM 9.5 – New features for Sandstorm and WAF

The new UTM 9.5 firmware has been available since May 4, 2017. While the SFOS for the XG firewalls currently only fixes bugs to ensure stability, the UTM gets new features in the latest release.

The list of new features is manageable, but still offers interesting innovations. Unfortunately, the “Let’s Encrypt” implementation often requested by our customers is missing, but hopefully this will come with v9.6.

So here is the list of new features:

  • WAF URL redirection
  • WAF configurable TLS version
  • WAF true file type detection
  • WAF templates
  • Sophos Sandstorm configuration of data center
  • Sophos Sandstorm file exceptions
  • RESTful API to configure UTM
  • AWS CloudWatch Logs Agent
  • 64-bit PostgreSQL database
  • Email notification for expiring certificates
  • Support Access for SSH
  • SNMP monitoring of the file system

Various improvements of important functions

For those of you who want to read a bit more in-depth about the new features, I’ll go into a few more points in the list above.

Sophos Sandstorm

  • The data center location can now be selected manually and you no longer have to rely on DNS-based location detection.
  • Sandstorm activity reporting has now been improved for email attachments.
  • You can now define an exception for certain file types so that they are not sent to Sophos Sandstorm.

Web Application Firewall

  • With the “WAF URL Redirection” you can redirect the traffic of a WAF protected URL to another backend system or URL.
  • “WAF protection” and “authentication policy templates” have been added for common Microsoft services for protection and authentication.
  • You can now configure the minimum TLS version to improve security.
  • “WAF Proxy Protocol” Support for using client IP information within the ProxyProtocol header to make decisions based on policies and improve logging.
  • “True File Type Scanning” allows you to block uploads and downloads based on the MIME type.

Management and reporting

  • Downloads all UTM logs in a single archive.
  • Support Access with SSH extends the existing Support Access function
  • 64-bit PostgreSQL database to generate reports with large data sets faster. The existing database is migrated.
  • Now you will be informed via WebAdmin and email 30 days before the certificate expires, so you have enough time to renew the certificates.
  • You can now also configure Sophos UTM 9 via RESTful APIs.
