Classify Sophos Firewall Home Edition and Sophos Home

Sophos is mostly used in corporate environments. Nevertheless, there are also useful options for private use and home labs: the free Sophos Firewall Home Edition as a software firewall, a small XGS appliance with Base License or Sophos Home as endpoint protection for Windows and macOS.

These options should not be confused. Home Edition is not a license for a Sophos hardware appliance. Sophos Home is not a Sophos Central enterprise endpoint. And an XGS without a security subscription can be used as a firewall, but it does not replace a fully licensed protection operation.

Which Sophos variant is suitable?

The right variant depends largely on the goal:- Home network or home lab with its own hardware: The Sophos Firewall Home Edition is suitable if a separate computer or a deliberately prepared VM can be overwritten.

  • Small Sophos hardware at home or in the lab: An XGS appliance with Base License can be cleaner than old PC hardware. Support, updates and security features must be checked separately.
  • Protect Windows or macOS devices privately: Sophos Home is the right consumer product. It is not the same as Sophos Central Endpoint.
  • Protect productive company environment: The normal Sophos Firewall licensing is relevant for this. Home edition and private assumptions are not the way to do this.

For productive corporate environments, licensing, support, warranty, update authorization and required security modules should always be checked. The basics are in Sophos Firewall Base License understand and Which Sophos Firewall bundles are there?.

Sophos Firewall Home EditionThe Sophos Firewall Home Edition is a free software version of the Sophos Firewall for private use. The variant is particularly suitable for home labs, those interested in technology and private networks in which a dedicated firewall is to be operated.

Typical applications:

  • Home network with separate firewall hardware
  • Homelab or test environment
  • private learning environment for Sophos Firewall
  • Remote access or VLAN testing outside of a productive customer environment

The installation nature is important: The Home Edition comes with its own operating system. During installation, existing data on the target system is overwritten. That’s why you need a separate, dedicated computer or a deliberately prepared virtual environment.

Requirements and limits

For the Sophos Firewall Home Edition you need:

  • Intel compatible computer,
  • at least two network interfaces,
  • separate data carrier or a system that can be overwritten,
  • sufficient network knowledge for routing, DHCP, DNS, NAT and firewall rules. For the Home Edition, the CPU limit remains the most important technical framework. Sophos launched on 20. May 2025 announced that the previous RAM limit of the Home Edition has been lifted and the CPU core limitation is now the focus. If older Sophos pages, screenshots or license advertisements still speak of 4 Cores / 6 GB RAM, you should consciously check this information against the current Sophos community announcement about RAM license change.

More RAM does not automatically make a Home Edition installation faster. CPU performance, network cards, storage, drivers, VPN load, activated security functions and clean network design remain crucial.

Support is also to be assessed differently than with a business firewall. For the Home Edition, Sophos refers to the Sophos Firewall community. This is fine for private use and testing, but is no substitute for a productive support process.

XGS Appliance with Base License

Some private or very small setups use a small Sophos XGS appliance instead of their own hardware, for example a XGS87. This can be technically cleaner than an old PC because the appliance, ports and platform are clearly defined. But you have to separate things clearly:

  • The Sophos Firewall Home Edition does not run as a free home license on a Sophos appliance.
  • An XGS appliance has a Base License, but not all security subscriptions automatically.
  • Firmware updates, support, RMA and protection features depend on the specific license and support status.
  • For productive use, simply asking “is the firewall running?” is sufficient. not out.

Basic firewall functions are possible in the base license variant, for example:

  • Create firewall rules
  • IPsec and SSL VPN for remote access
  • Site-to-site IPsec connections
  • basic routing and NAT
  • Sophos Wireless for older APX scenarios, not for AP6 cloud-only operation

For regular firmware updates, after the free initial updates Enhanced Support or appropriate support authorization is relevant. The update classification can be found in article Sophos Firewall Updates will no longer be free in the future.

Which protective functions may be missingFor Home Edition, Base License and not fully licensed appliances, you should pay particular attention to which protection functions are actually available and operating. Depending on the variant, these points, among others, may be missing or limited:

  • Synchronized Security or Security Heartbeat,
  • Sophos Zero-Day Protection,
  • certain security subscriptions,
  • Manufacturer support and RMA claims,
  • defined update and lifecycle processes.

This is not automatically a problem for a home lab. But it is crucial for productive environments. A firewall without current updates, without appropriate protection modules and without monitoring can create a false feeling of security.

Sophos Firewall Download Home Edition

The ISO for the installation can be downloaded from the Sophos website:

Before installation, it should be clear which device will be overwritten, how to restore Internet access and how to get back in case of failure. For productive firewalls, a cleanly planned Sophos Firewall Getting Started process is more relevant than Home Edition.

Sophos Home for private endpointsIn addition to a firewall, endpoint protection is still needed on Windows and macOS devices. Sophos Central is intended for companies. For private use, Sophos offers the separate product Sophos Home.

Sophos Home is not a replacement for a Sophos Firewall license and is not a full enterprise Sophos Central Endpoint setup. It is a consumer product for private devices. According to the current Sophos Home website, the focus is on Windows and macOS, with features such as malware protection, ransomware protection, web protection, central device management and support depending on the offering.

Sophos Home can be reached at this address:

Practical recommendation

The Sophos Firewall Home Edition is interesting for private tests and learning environments. You get a true Sophos Firewall experience without licensing a business subscription. For long-term operation at home, you should still realistically plan for effort, power consumption, hardware status, backup, updates and community support. For a small hardware appliance, you should not only consider the purchase price, but also the support status, firmware updates, security subscriptions and lifecycle. Anyone who runs an XGS without a bundle should at least understand what the Base License does and what it doesn’t.

Checklist

  • Only install Home Edition on dedicated hardware or deliberately prepared VM.
  • Before installation, ensure that no required data is overwritten.
  • Plan at least two network interfaces.
  • Take into account the CPU limit of the Home Edition and do not use older RAM information without checking.
  • Plan for community support instead of business support.
  • For XGS Appliances Base License, check support and security subscriptions separately.
  • Do not make home edition assumptions for productive environments.
  • Plan endpoint protection separately, for example with Sophos Home for private devices or Sophos Central Endpoint in the corporate environment.

FAQ

Is Sophos Firewall Home Edition free?

Yes, Sophos provides the Firewall Home Edition free of charge for personal use. However, it is a software firewall for dedicated hardware or suitable test environments, not a free license for a Sophos hardware appliance.

Can you install Home Edition on an XGS appliance?

This should not be planned as a normal route. For Sophos appliances, the regular appliance and license logic is relevant. An XGS with Base License is a different model than the free Home Edition.

Is the Base License enough for home use?

For simple firewall, routing or VPN scenarios, the Base License may be sufficient. The specific license status must be checked for security functions, support, firmware updates and productive expectations.

Is Sophos Home the same as Sophos Central Endpoint?

No. Sophos Home is a consumer product for personal Windows and macOS devices. Sophos Central Endpoint is intended for enterprise environments, central policies, roles, licenses and operational processes.
