Problems with AP6 Access Points

Update 04.10.2024

Based on feedback from our customers, we would like to inform you that Sophos AP6 Access Points may experience stability, range and roaming problems. These issues do not occur in all environments and have been investigated by Sophos since June 2024.

As the problems have been going on for months, we recommend that you choose another Access Points provider or wait until Sophos has fixed the problems. A firmware update to fix these problems is in the works. However, we are still waiting to hear when this will be available.

Unfortunately, Sophos has not yet officially commented on the problems and we are receiving a lot of feedback from other partners who are experiencing similar problems. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any feedback(Contact).

Frequently asked questions

  1. Does the Sophos AP6 420 access point support the 6 GHz band? No, the Sophos AP6 420 does not support the 6 GHz band. Only models ending with an "E" at the end of the model number support Wi-Fi 6E and thus the 6 GHz band.
  2. What does the support and service package include? The support and service package includes Sophos Central Management, firmware updates, 24/7 phone support and Advance RMA replacements.
  3. What is the limited lifetime warranty? Sophos offers a limited lifetime warranty on all AP6 series models, ensuring long-term product reliability and quality.
  4. Do all AP6 models support 6 GHz? No, only the models with an 'E' at the end of the model number support Wi-Fi 6E and thus the 6 GHz band.
  5. What is Wi-Fi 6? What is Wi-Fi 6E? Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) is currently the latest available version of the Wi-Fi network protocol. The standard supports both the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands. The 'E' in Wi-Fi 6E stands for 'Extended' and extends support to the 6 GHz band.
  6. What are the advantages of Wi-Fi 6/E? Here are the highlights:
    • Better overall performance for devices that support the standard
    • Higher maximum throughput possible
    • Support for 2.4 and 5 GHz, makes the standard available for a wider range of devices, incl. Low-cost IoT devices that often support only 2.4 GHz (Wi-Fi 5 supported only 5 GHz)
    • Wi-Fi 6E support for 6 GHz opens up a cleaner, less crowded space for high-performance networking
    • Support for WPA3 makes Wi-Fi 6 more secure (especially since WPA2 fell victim to Krack attacks some time ago)
    • In addition, there are various technical changes and energy-saving improvements.
  7. Management / Support and services Why do we have a support and services subscription?
    • As with our other networking products, we are harmonising our support model to also cover Central Management, 24x7 phone support, firmware upgrades and Advance RMA. We have also introduced a limited lifetime warranty for AP6, which is new to the wireless product line. This is consistent with the approach we have for Sophos Switch. With unified support and service subscriptions for our network hardware products, this paves the way for us to consider interesting packaging models in the future, such as an enterprise licensing agreement.
    • We have many large deployments running on Sophos Central that would not have been possible on a firewall. Some of our largest customers manage thousands of APXs from Central, a testament to the scalability and manageability of our cloud platform. Sophos Central Wi-Fi is inherently more scalable than on-premise Wi-Fi, which eats up expensive hardware resources that could be better used for other critical firewall functions.
    • The previous Central Management licensing model was waived for all AP and APX Series Access Points and has now been discontinued. The 'free' Central Management was used as a strategic incentive to get people to use Sophos Central Wireless and was very successful in getting people to switch and experience the benefits of our cloud-managed Wi-Fi

The Sophos AP6 420 Access Point is the optimal choice for organizations looking for a future-proof, reliable and high-performance solution for their network management.
