Sophos APX Access Points – End of Life and End of Sale Date

Sophos APX Access Points – End of Life and End of Sale Date

You read that right: Sophos has announced the End of Sale and End of Life dates for the APX Access Points. The Access Points are not End of Sale yet, but they will be soon: on March 31, 2024.

End of Sale and End of Life affect the following Access Points in the APX series:

  • APX 120
  • APX 320
  • APX 530
  • APX 740
  • APX 320X (Outdoor)

Sophos APX Access Points End of Sale

After the new AP6 Access Points were introduced, it was clear that End of Sale would not be far behind.

The APX models can still be ordered from us until March 31, 2024, or while stocks last.

Sophos APX Access Points End of Life

As mentioned, the End of Sale date was foreseeable, but the End of Life date did come as a bit of a surprise. 😧 The Access Points are still being sold and actually include a 5-year warranty (1825 days). However, Sophos has already set the End of Life date for December 31, 2027, which is much earlier than expected. Put somewhat bluntly, this means that by the end of December 2027 you may be left holding hardware scrap that, in the worst case, is only 3 years and 8 months old.

Anyone currently managing APX Access Points via a Sophos SG or XG Firewall will have to find another management solution even earlier, as these firewall series will reach End of Life before then.

The following firewall products are affected:

  • Sophos Firewall on the XG and SG Series, running SFOS, will be EoL on March 31, 2025.
  • Sophos Firewalls in the SG Series running UTM OS will be EoL on June 30, 2026.

To keep using the APX series until the very last day, it will sooner or later have to be migrated to Sophos Central. Management for APX Access Points remains free there.

AP6 Series as the successor to the APX Access Points

Sophos Access Points with WiFi 6 were a long time coming. The AP6 models have been available since Q4 2023, but several key features are still missing from the new models. Compared with the APX series, prices for the AP6 Access Points have increased sharply. From the perspective of the popular APX 120, its successor costs more than 50% more and requires a subscription if you want to manage it via Sophos Central.

Since January 8, 2024, the WiFi 7 standard has been officially approved. Flagship notebooks and smartphones are already shipping with this new standard, so whether you move from WiFi 5 (APX) to WiFi 6 (AP6) or go straight to WiFi 7 is ultimately up to you. At least there is still time to think about it. Based on our assessment of Sophos, its WiFi 7 models will not appear before 2028 at the earliest.
