There have been many signs that Sophos will discontinue the UTM this year. Now the time has come, there is a date.
The great thing about this news is that we can use the header image that we already used for another post. The Sophos UTM is no longer a topic for most readers of this blog and we ourselves have been finished with it for some time.

Still, it’s newsworthy as there are still many admins out there who wanted to ride the horse until it died out from under them. So now there is an official date from Sophos.

Why is the UTM being discontinued?
The SG hardware with the UTM OS was a top product for several years. However, Sophos realized early on that something fundamentally new was needed for the future. Therefore, for some time (over 5 years) there is the Sophos Firewall OS. This new platform has evolved and the UTM has stood still. There have been signs for some time that the UTM will be discontinued, but Sophos has been very reluctant to give a date here. At the latest when MDR integrated telemetry data from other firewall manufacturers at the end of 2022, but not that of the in-house UTM, it was clear that it wouldn’t be long.
The XGS firewall is perfectly suited for hybrid infrastructures, whether on premise or multi-cloud. And unlike UTM, SASE is not a foreign concept for the XGS Firewall. Just briefly, Secure Access Service Edge (SASE) is a network security concept where the firewall system is just one component in a broader ecosystem. SASE combines network security, access control and application optimisation in a single cloud-based solution.

When is the Sophos UTM End of Life?
On 30.06.2026 is the official End of Life date announced by Sophos.
When will the SG hardware with the UTM OS be End of Sale?
From 30.06.2023 it is only while stocks last.
When will Sophos UTM no longer be available for purchase for 3 year licenses?
From 30.06.2023 there will be no more licenses with a duration of 3 years.
When is the last renewal for the UTM license possible?
You can still purchase annual licences until 30.06.2025. After that, only monthly licences will be available for purchase until the final end-of-life date.
Migration from UTM to SFOS
For UTM admins, the question now naturally arises as to how to migrate from the Sophos SG Firewall with the UTM to the latest Sophos Firewall?
All in all, it is a completely new operating system and it is possible to adopt parts of the configuration. However, one should be aware that with a very complex configuration this cannot be done in a few hours. In the past 5 years, we have gained a lot of experience with migrations. Often, we have used this migration as an opportunity to better segment the network or to question the existing configuration.
