Sophos UTM - End of Life 2026
There were already many signs that Sophos would announce the end of Sophos UTM this year. Now the time has come: there is a date.
The nice thing about this news is that we can reuse the header image from another post. Sophos UTM is no longer relevant for most readers of this blog, and we ourselves moved on from it some time ago.

Even so, it is worth a news item, because there are still many admins out there who wanted to ride this horse until it collapsed underneath them. Now there is an official date from Sophos.
Why is the UTM being discontinued?
SG Hardware with UTM OS was an excellent product for several years. However, Sophos recognized early on that something fundamentally new was needed for the future. That is why Sophos Firewall OS has been available for quite some time now, more than five years. This new platform has continued to evolve, while UTM has stood still. There had been signs for some time that UTM would be discontinued, but Sophos struggled to name a date. When MDR integrated telemetry data from other firewall vendors at the end of 2022, but not telemetry from Sophos’ own UTM, it was clear that it would not take much longer.
The XGS Firewall is ideally suited for hybrid infrastructures, whether on-premises or multi-cloud. And unlike UTM, SASE is not a foreign concept for the XGS Firewall. In short, Secure Access Service Edge (SASE) is a network security concept in which the firewall system is only one component of a broader ecosystem. SASE combines network security, access control, and application optimization in a single cloud-based solution.

When is the Sophos UTM End of Life?
June 30, 2026, is the official End of Life date announced by Sophos.
When will the SG Hardware with the UTM OS be End of Sale?
From June 30, 2023, it will only be available while supplies last.
When will 3-year licenses for the Sophos UTM no longer be available for purchase?
From June 30, 2023, licenses with a term of 3 years will no longer be available.
When is the last renewal possible for the UTM license?
Annual licenses can still be purchased until June 30, 2025. After that, only monthly licenses will be available until the final End of Life date.
Migration from UTM to SFOS
For UTM admins, the obvious question now is: how can you migrate from a Sophos SG Firewall with UTM to the latest Sophos Firewall?
All in all, it is a completely new operating system, although parts of the configuration can be transferred. With a very complex configuration, however, you should be aware that this will not be done in just a few hours. Over the past five years, we have gained a lot of experience with migrations. Often, this migration has also been used as an opportunity to segment the network more effectively or to question the existing configuration itself.
